STEVE LYON – UK based producer and partner of CMC ENTERTAINMENT –
Steve Lyon Biography – 22/09/09
Steve started his career in the late eighties as an engineer under Rolling Stones / The Who producer Glyn Johns. Working with Glyn, Steve learnt the importance of having a direct approach to recording, and forming a great relationship with the band. The “live element” of recording is often the backbone of band recordings for him still, even though a lot may be replaced at a later date, he believes the excitement of the “first take” is never lost somehow.
Steve has a talent in making himself a part of the creative process and enjoys overseeing the general sound sculpture of a record. He has built a reputation from a young age for working with highly creative artists and in gaining their respect. As well as engineering whilst producing, he is also a skilled and musical programmer.
After cutting his teeth at Glyn’s own production studio, Steve decided to move on to the Townhouse, the famous The Manor studios in Oxfordshire and after touring Europe and North America with Mike and the Mechanics was offered an engineering position at the George Martin owned, Air Studios to develop his productions skills.
It was here that he came into contact with Paul McCartney and worked on sessions for three months that were included in his albums “Flaming Pie” and “Flowers In the Dirt”. Steve followed that by mixing and engineering various project at AIR including the superb Wedding Present albums “George Best” and “Bizarro”. He also worked as a freelance engineer at Church Studios where he met Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox who were working on some demos. Steve loved the vibe so much he worked on a few mixes for them and was then called in to work with Suzanne Vega. Of course, it wasn’t long before Depeche Mode were inquiring about Steve working with them on their Violator album, which had already been started in Denmark. After hooking up with Alan Wilder and Flood who played him Personal Jesus, he was blown away and absolutely hooked on the band and production team.
Subsequently this led to working on Alan Wilder’s solo material RECOIL and the Mute Records signed, Nitzrebb. The Depeche production team ended up staying together to work on Songs Of Faith and Devotion, more live material culminating in the live album plus the Devotional Tour video which was produced with Alan. What was supposed to be 3 weeks working with the band, turned into 6 years !!
It was via “the Mode” that he was then introduced to Robert Smith and The Cure. Robert called Steve directly and they met for a beer at the old Fiction office in London. He offered Steve the gig to work with him as an engineer /mixer on Wild Mood Swings within 5 minutes. It wasn’t long before Robert walked through the door of the studio and asked him to co-produce the album with him. So they based themselves in a couple of country houses and built their own studios to make the record. Unfortunately, it took a long time to finish, with new band members joining and touring commitments in the middle of recording delaying the process and ultimately the release. But the album went on to become a platinum selling album and included the hit singles “Mint Car”, “The 13th” and “Gone”.
Never one to stand still, Steve had a real desire to work overseas, having toured USA twice and worked in Europe on a couple of projects, he decided to base himself between Germany, Italy, New York and London, learning 2 languages in process. That led him to hook up with the band Reamonn, whose lead singer Rea was Irish whilst all other band members were German, which lead in turn to a wonderfully successful and curious musical hybrid.
He worked as a producer on their No 1 selling album “ Tuesday” and their single “Supergirl” became the No 1 airplay hit in Germany. Along with the follow up singles, “Joesphine” and “Waiting There For You”, the album was a huge success and led to the follow up album, “Dream No 7” again for Virgin Records, Germany. Their first single “Supergirl” still holds the accolade for being the biggest selling first single of a new act in Germany, over 350,000. Both albums went Platinum very soon after release.
He then came back to UK to work with Britain’s then most promising rock band, Amplifier. They achieved huge critical acclaim before unfortunately falling foul of a floundering record label.
The self titled debut from the Manchester based trio received amazing reviews across the music press including 5Ks in Kerrang and 9/10 in Metal Hammer.
Other reviews of the album include:
KERRANG: “Amplifier is the utterly electrifying sound of a British rock scene-altering record. Enjoy in all its infinite glory”
METAL HAMMER: “Outstanding debut…the hottest property in British rock music for a long, long time”
THE FLY (5/5): “…it's a f**king revelation, file next to Led Zeppelin 1, Ritual de lo Habitual and Superunknown”
ROCKSOUND (9/10): “A polished, soaring rock epic”
PLAYMUSIC: “Your new favourite band…a classic…discover it early”
Working with Italian artists has also always been a priority for Steve and in the past he has produced and mixed albums for a wide variety of bands, most notably mixing the No 1 selling album for Subsonica. More recently he was brought in by Italian superstar, Laura Pausini to mix and record a number of records for her album entitled, “Primavera in Anticipo” (Warners). They spent the summer of 2008 at Laura’s studio outside of Bologna and the album on release, was received with huge success, going on to reach no 1 in the Italian charts along with top 10 chart positions in a variety of Latin speaking territories. Steve’s mixing work on the album Won him 2 Latin Grammy’s to include “Record Of The Year 2008” for the song “En Cambio No” aswell as “Best Female Pop Vocal Album 2008”.
So what does the future hold ? 2009 has seen Steve set up his own production studio at the wonderfully secluded, Platts Eyott island on the river Thames near Hampton Court which will offer young talented bands and artists the opportunity to work with Steve on new material and first albums. Bands such as the powerfully impressive London based, Suzerain and Sheffield songsters, The Spires are already taking full advantage of the space. Recent Progects in 2010 have included The Mittsubushi’s and a John Keneday Playlist on XFM for Anison, a week after finishing recording !
